Prairie dogs – genus rodent of the family Sciuridae. Prevalent in USA, Canada and Mexico. They live in large colonies, dig deep burrows. The name originates from the sound they produce that is similar to dog’s barking.
Their average size is 30-40 cm, weight from 0.5kg to 1.5 kg.
Prairie dogs are herbivorous, feed on herbs, seeds, flower blossoms, fruits, but sometimes also feed on certain insects.
